Cynthia Rowley is apprehensive about saying she's a surfer.

Though the designer lives on the beach in Montauk, NY, on summer weekends and takes her board to the waves any chance she gets, "It makes me nervous to say I'm a surfer, because then I have to be f-ing good," she admits to StyleList.

Whether Rowley shreds or not, it's safe to say she definitely looks the part, particularly in her new collection for Roxy.

The line made its debut exclusively at Barneys CO-OP in New York City's SoHo neighborhood at a stylish soirée filled with fashion types and hard-core surfers like Tracy Feith and Katie Lee.

The collection of swimsuits, cover-ups, and neoprene pieces evolved organically. "I hooked up with the Roxy people, and it was an instant explosion of ideas," Rowley says.

"They have the history and expertise for the functional side, and I know what my dream surf stuff would be. It has the technical expertise of surf wear."

Rowley has wear-tested all of the pieces and admits you don't have to know how to hang ten to appreciate the collection.

"In a way, actually, the only thing that is really authentic surf is the wet suit," she says. Still, that doesn't mean wearers won't experience the benefits.

"You know how they say everyone looks good in a wet suit? It's like a body shaper on the outside," she explains, gesturing to a magically slimming color-blocked neoprene tank dress.

For pieces designed to slim on turf, read about the designer's upcoming shapewear line.

Build the perfect jean wardrobe - Tip of the day

There are so many different types of jeans that it could really make a girl crazy. Let's cut to the chase. There are four crucial pairs that we should all have in our closets.
The Straight Leg

This is a classic pant that isn't as tight as a skinny jean but works in a similar manner. Therefore, proportion is key. But once you have that down, you can pair your straights with flats and a blazer and look totally chic. They are the perfect, comfy everyday jean.

The Trouser

Trouser cuts are extremely flattering on many body types because of their thigh skimming top half and wider bottom. The cut is also office appropriate and a good choice for casual Friday's. They can also take any blah outfit in a more elegant direction.

The Flare

Flares come with a variety of names – boot cut, wide legged, etc. The point is, is that they are an easy flared fit that helps balance out the body by creating the illusion of an hourglass with the flared bottom half. They should also be just a smidge tight in the thigh than a trouser cut. An easy, super soft pair is an ideal weekend staple. You know, for those crazy errand filled Saturday's when tight jeans just won't do.

The Skinny

Skinny jeans are just that, skinny contraptions that seemingly cut off circulation to the legs. But don't be fooled. Anyone can wear a skinny. You just have to know your proportions and get a great, relaxed fit. The biggest mistake woman make is getting jeans that are too tight or pairing their skinnies with equally fitted tops; a look best reserved for pin-thins like Nicole Richie and Keira Knightley. The best way to pair them is with a loose top that hits at the hip. This look is flattering on anyone so you can't go wrong. And unless you are Nicole Richie, your skinny's are best saved for evenings out with heels.

That's it! These jeans will cover everything from day to night, office to errands. Many of the other jeans we're seeing now – boyfriend fit, extreme wide leg, colored denim – are trends that will come and go but these timeless jeans, when purchased in the right fit for your bod, will last you a lifetime.

A good mass trend starts in a maligned but powerful subculture of fashion-obsessed trendsters. For the past few years, hipsters have revived the beard and all of its variations to a segment of the population that once preferred razors and Brut by Faberge. Check.

Next, Hollywood steps in and pumps it out to the masses. In November, Brad Pitt flexed his mustache muscle, claiming that it was a fashion statement. Of course, it was also necessary for the filming of his latest flick, Tarantino’s WWII epic Inglorius Basterds. Earlier in the year, James Franco has a hard time giving up the porn stache he grew for Milk.

Then, of course there are other seemingly connected phenomenons like Celebritymustache.com and the super nostalgic making of Magnum PI: The Movie — in which Matthew McConaughey will likely join the mustache revolution.

Lastly, a broad cultural shift brings the trend into the mainstream — enter the recession of 2008. According to at least one grooming theory, tough times are good times for hairy men. As the theory goes, the hairiness of manly men is found more attractive during tough times because it appears to symbolize security. Don’t ask us why? But it seems like a pretty pro-mustache development.

Sure, the Times may have totally missed the mark here — just because there’s a wall cloud, that doesn’t mean there’s going to be a tornado — but you have to admit that conditions are optimal for a mustache comeback event. Disturbing as it may be, we may be in for a very hairy 2009 in more ways than one.

Are We Witnessing a Mustache Revolution?

When you consider the sheer number of mustaches appearing in Hollywood films and even on the red carpet these days, some of us are nervously wondering: is the mustache about to make a comeback? As painful as it is to watch, A-list stars the likes of James Franco and Robert Downey Jr. (pictured) have been showing off their upper lip hair on and off the screen. Could 2009 really be the historic year that marks the return of the long-scorned stache?

Following the life and death of a clandestine facial hair trend can be a tricky thing. When it comes to down to it, a good fad is pretty much dead by the time anybody in the news media has found out about it. But this mustache thing has the makings of a honest-to-goodness sea change.
Hot and Hairy - Our Favorite Manly Men

From “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenenbaums” to his latest film, the stop-motion Roald Dahl adaptation “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” director Wes Anderson has carved out a reputation for bringing to life some of the quirkiest and most stylized characters in cinema history.

And let’s not forget the man himself — always spiffy with a dash of eccentric in his trademark suits, made by Anderson’s longtime tailor Vahram Mateosian of New York City’s Mr. Ned. Mateosian spoke to StyleList about how he’s helped turn his famous client into a modern-day style icon.

StyleList: How did you first start working with Wes?
Vahram Mateosian: Wes started coming here in 2000. I think that a store in New York that sells suiting fabric recommended my place to him.

SL: How would you describe Wes’ signature style?
VM: Well, he definitely likes his clothes very fitted at the shoulders and waist. It ends up looking very natural on him because he’s tall and thin. It doesn’t work for everyone. And he wears a lot of corduroy, which is very comfortable. Some time ago he wore his pants a little shorter and his jacket sleeves a little shorter, but he hasn’t done that for at least five years. [Though, Mr. Fox is wearing just that in Anderson's latest movie.]

SL: What is your favorite Wes Anderson film, and why?
VM: I like them all, but I’m biased! “The Royal Tenenbaums” is special to me because I made some of the clothes for that film. I’m proud that Wes asked me to do it, and I think that I was able to produce the styles that he had envisioned for the characters.

SL: Is it true that puppet makers working on the “Fantastic Mr. Fox” asked you for fabric swatches for the clothes they created for the film?
VM: I’ve never had contact with the puppet makers. But the rust-colored suit that the fox wears looks awfully familiar. [See above pictures.]

SL: Are there any other notable people that you have worked with?
VM: Yes — Charles Oakley [former NBA player], David Brown [producer] and others. I’ve also made a couple of things for Wes’ friend Jason Schwartzman [voice of "Ash" in "Fantastic Mr Fox"]. Really nice guy.

SL: What’s your number-one piece of advice for guys buying their first suit?
VM: Get something basic that you can wear in any situation: work, festive occasion… Usually plain navy or charcoal gray lightweight wool works best.

SL: What’s the biggest suit trend right now?
VM: Very high buttoned jackets with narrow lapels and soft shoulders with very small pads. Mostly two-button jackets. Very form-fitted trousers, as well — no pleats, thin legs.

SL: What’s the biggest suit mistake men make?
VM: Choosing a style that doesn’t fit their body type. Guys will look at a magazine and say to themselves, ‘Hey, that looks great, that’s exactly what I want.’ The models in the magazines are six feet tall and weigh 140 pounds — of course it looks great, how can it not look great?, the guy is in great shape. I can copy the style and the fabric, but most guys are not that body type. If you’re having something made, work with your tailor to get the look that’s best.

“Fantastic Mr. Fox” is now playing in theaters everywhere.

From the outside, the Nexus One and Droid smartphones have a lot in common. Both run Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system software and have touch-sensitive screens. Each is designed to compete against Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone.

Analysts use so-called teardown analysis from iSuppli and other researchers to assess how much profit a manufacturer or service provider may get from sales of a consumer electronics device. Smartphones are expected to represent 38% of all mobile devices sold in 2013, up from 14% in 2009, according to Gartner (IT). Demand for such advanced mobile phones, which provide access to e-mail, the Web, games, and various software-based tools, has surged in the years since Apple introduced the iPhone. Analysis from iSuppli focuses on components and doesn’t include additional costs such as labor, marketing, and distribution.

Google and Motorola representatives declined to comment on iSuppli’s reports.

The Nexus One’s parts may be cheaper because of the price of its memory card, says iSuppli principal analyst Kevin Keller. The Droid boasts a 16-gigabyte flash memory card that goes for about $35, while the Nexus One is sold with a four-gigabyte card that costs about $8.50. The Nexus One analysis is preliminary and subject to revision, iSuppli says.

Qualcomm pushing TI out?

One chip common to both smartphones, and used in Apple’s iPhone 3GS as well, drives the onscreen compass. All three use compass chips from AKM Semiconductor, the San Jose-located subsidiary of the Tokyo-based industrial and electronics company Asahi Kasei.

HTC makes the Nexus One under contract for Google. T-Mobile USA, the U.S. mobile phone arm of Deutsche Telekom (DT), sells the Nexus One with a two-year service plan for $179. Motorola (MOT) makes the Droid, which is being sold through Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications (VZ) and Vodafone (VOD), for $199 with a two-year service contract.

Qualcomm competitor Texas Instruments (TXN) landed four chips on the Droid, including a $13 version of its OMAP chip. TI’s share of Droid components amounts to about $23, or 12% of the total. TI may have landed no more than $2 of chips in the Nexus One, iSuppli says. "As Qualcomm has been evolving its technology and adding the ability to handle the applications as well as the wireless connection, TI is getting pushed out," Keller says.

Chipmaker Broadcom (BRCM), based in Irvine, Calif., supplied a single chip to handle both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi features on the Nexus One. TI and Triquint Semiconductor (TQNT) of Hillsboro, Ore., together supplied three chips that handled those features in the Droid, Keller says.

On the inside, however, the phones boast some key differences. The Nexus One, introduced on Jan. 5, may have been cheaper to build, according to analysis of the devices by market research firm iSuppli. The components used to build the Nexus One may cost about $174 while the Droid’s cost about $185, according to iSuppli estimates. Google sells the Nexus One without a wireless service contract for $529, while the Droid is available contract-free from Best Buy (BBY) for $599.

Wireless chipmaker Qualcomm (QCOM) is a winner in both phones. With the Nexus One, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip handles the connection to wireless networks and is responsible for running the software. Keller estimates the cost of the chip at $30.50, or about 18% of the device’s component cost. For the Droid, Qualcomm also supplied a less-advanced wireless chip that cost about $14.

Keine guten Nachrichten, denn Wohnungmangel bedeutet auch h?here Mieten.
