An exhibit of a WWI aviator’s outfit in the Canadian War Museum cites the term “fug” boots.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt tend to drive most of us crazy. There are the fans, but many people love to hate this duo. Who is laughing all the way to the bank? Speidi. And after they put their money in the bank, Heidi Montag purchases the most absurd amount of designer handbags. Her bags are expensive, trendy, exotic, and the collection does not stop growing. Promoting themselves, Heidi’s Playboy cover, and whatever else, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were spotted at LAX today.
No matter how amazing her collection of handbags appears, Heidi has the capability of making amazing bags look ridiculous. Take her oversized Hermes Birkin Haut à Courroies (HAC) that she was spotted carrying today for example. I have always yearned for a Hermes travel Birkin, but after I see it on Heidi I cringe a bit.

Hermes, a brand known for understated elegance, must be nauseous after seeing these photos. Certainly, Spencer holding up the Playboy magazine with Heidi on the cover, as they pose to kiss does not help the overall look. Many others sport large Hermes travel bags, like Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham, they just wear it with much more class. I will continue to love this bag, but wish someone would nab it from Heidi and wear it with some grace.

Last week Barack and Michelle Obama hosted a reception for visiting foreign dignitaries at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Over the course of the evening, the president, whose “amazingly consistent” smile created a viral video, and first lady posed for over 130 photographs with their guests, all of which were later posted to the State Department’s Flickr page.

This caused a problem: Included was a shot of the Obamas posing with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, his wife Sonsoles Espinosa, and two daughters, Laura, 16, and Alba, 13, who’ve never had photographs of themselves published previously in print or online due to a Spanish law prohibiting the media from doing so. The photo of Zapatero and his family with the Obamas was quickly removed from Flickr at the request of the Spanish government but still lurks online (in the shot seen here their faces are blurred). The flap is adding concerns on the issue of the privacy of world leaders‘ children in the digital age.

Writing on The Daily Beast today, Republican Senator John McCain’s daughter Meghan expressed sympathy for the girls, who’ve been labeled as “goth” in the photo. She says she’s also bewildered by the Spanish government’s reaction:

I want to start out by saying I can’t believe there is a country that exists where the media protects children of public figures, let alone the prime minister’s daughters. It is literally hard for me to fathom that there is a place that respects the privacy of underage children of politicians and diplomats. The second part of this that makes me very sad is that these two girls are enduring a sort of baptism by fire with the media scrutiny that surrounds their family portrait with the Obamas. Not only are they not used to being photographed, but their first foray into being photographed and criticized is on a very public scale with the most famous and powerful politicians in the entire world.

In addition to successfully lobbying the State Department to remove the photo, the Spanish government went so far as to have the state-owned Spanish news agency EFE refrain from distributing it.

The plethora of ridicule faced by Prime Minister Zapatero’s children is a reminder of the harsh scrutiny children of world leaders often face over their appearance. Here in the U.S., Chelsea Clinton, who was so closely protected that Time Magazine referred to her as “the Garbo of presidential children,” was dealt a harsh review by conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh during her father’s presidency, in addition to being called “ugly” in an off-color joke told by none other than Meghan McCain’s father at a Republican fundraiser in 1998. The Bush twins Jenna and Barbara were famously ridiculed for – and photographed – partying with friends.

The Spanish government’s policy toward Zapatero’s children contrasts with the tricky relationship between the U.S. media and first daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 8, who have been largely sheltered from the press but certainly haven’t been invisible. Back in June, photographers were allowed to photograph the president walking to get ice cream with his girls on Father’s Day weekend, not long after the White House requested that the press not publish a photo of Obama waving to Sasha as she stood on one of the White House balconies. Meanwhile, the official White House Flickr page contains numerous “behind the scenes” pictures of the Obama children.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs recently said that the administration would permit press access to the Obama children when they are part of “official events with the president and first lady,” but added that “there should be a wide berth of privacy extended to the family” when they’re alone or doing something as a family. He added that the White House’s Flickr photos of the children exist to control the paparazzi market for pictures of the Obama children, the youngest to occupy the White House since John and Caroline Kennedy, who were also fiercely guarded.

Sheltering their children is forcing modern world leaders to deal with challenges most of their predecessors never had to contend with: digital technology and the Internet. The influx of digital cameras and cell phones and the rise of social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, etc. make it easy for anyone to take a photograph and distribute it widely in a matter of minutes, making it virtually impossible for even the highest levels of government to keep the genie in the bottle.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – The coup-installed president of Honduras backed down Monday from an escalating standoff with protesters and suggested he would restore civil liberties and reopen dissident television and radio stations by the end of the week.

Riot police ringed supporters of ousted President Manuel Zelaya who gathered for a large-scale protest march, setting off a daylong standoff. The government of interim President Roberto Micheletti declared the march illegal, sent soldiers to silence dissident broadcasters, and suspended civil liberties for 45 days.

But in a sudden reversal, Micheletti said Monday afternoon that he wanted to “ask the Honduran people for forgiveness” for the measures and said he would lift them in accordance with demands from the same Congress that installed him after a June 28 coup. He said he would discuss lifting the measures with court officials “as soon as possible,” adding: “By the end of this week we’ll have this resolved.”

He also repeated his pledge not to attack the Brazilian Embassy, where Zelaya has been holed up with 60 supporters since sneaking back into the country on Sept. 21. He even sent “a big hug” to Brazil’s president, a day after giving him a 10-day ultimatum to expel Zelaya or move him to Brazil.

His government also said it would welcome an advance team from the Organization of American States into the country starting Friday, after expelling four members of a similar team Sunday, and said an OAS commission of foreign ministers could visit on Oct. 7.

The increasingly authoritarian measures by the government had prompted international condemnation, though the U.S. representative to the OAS also had harsh words for Zelaya, calling his return to Honduras “irresponsible and foolish.”

The Micheletti government says Zelaya supporters are planning a violent insurrection.

“Some radio stations, some television stations, were calling for violence, for guerrilla war, and that had us in the government super worried,” Micheletti said.

So far, protests have seen little bloodshed — the government says three people have been killed since the coup, while protesters put the number at 10. Protest leader Juan Barahona said that could change.

“This mass movement is peaceful, but to the extent they repress us, fence us in and make this method useless, we have to find some other form of struggle,” he said.

Micheletti made clear that even if the emergency measures are lifted, “that doesn’t mean the police are going back to barracks.”

Monday’s march drew hundreds of people, many of whom covered their mouths with tape to protest government censorship. Protest leaders insisted that thousands more were trying to join but were stopped from leaving poorer neighborhoods or from traveling from the countryside.

“There is brutal repression against the people,” Zelaya told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Monday.

The emergency decree issued Sunday bans unauthorized gatherings and lets police arrest people without warrants, rights guaranteed in the Honduran Constitution. It also allows authorities to shut news media for “statements that attack peace and the public order, or which offend the human dignity of public officials, or attack the law.”

In the late afternoon, police allowed the protesters to board buses and leave.

Government soldiers raided the offices of Radio Globo and the television station Channel 36, both critics of the Micheletti government, and silenced both. Afterward, the TV station broadcast only a test pattern.

Radio Globo employees scrambled out of an emergency exit to escape the raid that involved as many as 200 soldiers.

“They took away all the equipment,” said owner Alejandro Villatoro. “This is the death of the station.”

Two journalists covering the raid for Mexico’s Televisa and Guatemala’s Guatevision were beaten by security forces, who also took their camera, according to Guatemala’s ambassador to the OAS, Jorge Skinner. He asked the InterAmerican Human Rights Commission to intervene.

The OAS held an emergency meeting in Washington on Monday after Honduras expelled the OAS advance team. Foreign Minister Carlos Lopez said the team had not given advance notice of its arrival.

U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley condemned the expulsion.

“I think it’s time for the de facto regime to put down the shovel,” he said. “With every action they keep on making the hole deeper.”

Lew Amselem, the U.S. representative to the OAS, also condemned the expulsion as “deplorable and foolish.” But had equally harsh words for Zelaya. He said returning without an agreement “serves neither the interests of the Honduran people nor those seeking the peaceful reestablishment of the democratic order in Honduras.”

He added: “Those who facilitated President Zelaya’s return … have a special responsibility for the prevention of violence and the well-being of the Honduran people.” He did not say to whom he was referring.

The increasingly authoritarian actions by the interim government signaled an abrupt shift in strategy after appealing for foreign support and arguing it ousted Zelaya to preserve democracy.

Only last week, Micheletti argued in a letter to the Washington Post that his government was not a coup, citing as evidence that freedom assembly was still allowed: “They do not guarantee freedom of the press, much less a respect for human rights. In Honduras, these freedoms remain intact and vibrant.”

He argued that the international community will have no choice but to recognize a Nov. 29 vote — “the ultimate civil exercise of any democracy — a free and open presidential election.”

Zelaya supporters noted that the emergency decree effectively outlawed any campaigning until two weeks before election day.

“If they can’t campaign … what happens then to the electoral solution?” asked protest leader Rafael Alegria.

Analysts called the shift a sign that the Micheletti government is feeling increasingly threatened.

“It certainly shows that they’re worried that Zelaya might be able to disrupt the government,” said Heather Berkman, a Honduras expert with the New York-based Eurasia Group. “Zelaya’s only recourse really is to mobilize people on the streets. I’m sure that Micheletti and the government know that and they’re going to do whatever they can to prevent that.”

She called it a risky move: “They’re damaging their own credibility, and really hurting the economy.”

About 100 world leaders are to gather at the UN to try and revitalise deadlocked talks on climate change.

The summit comes two months ahead of a key meeting in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, aimed at approving a global treaty on cutting carbon emissions.

China, one of the world’s biggest polluters, is expected to announce ambitious plans on climate change.

Negotiators are trying to agree on a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol on carbon emissions.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called Tuesday’s summit to try and inject political momentum into stalled climate talks.

But rich nations have not pledged to cut enough carbon to take the world out of danger.

Poor countries refuse to commit to binding caps, saying this would prevent them from developing their economies.

China’s role is crucial, because it is both an emerging economy, and a big polluter.

The UN’s chief climate change negotiator, Yvo de Boer, says he expects an important announcement from Beijing.

He said: “China domestic policy is already very ambitious but yes I do expect something dramatic.

“If you look at what happened in the course of the crisis the financial crisis we saw China being absolutely in the lead in terms of putting together an economic recovery package which had green economic growth at absolutely the heart of it in a sincere and serious way.”

There is concern about the world’s other big polluter, the United States.

President Barack Obama has recognised climate change as a pressing issue, unlike the previous administration.

But critics say Washington is moving too slowly on carbon legislation which does not go far enough.

A demonstration of political will by both China and the US would be important to breaking the deadlock in negotiations.

Comedian in chief Barack Obama revealed a deep personal secret on CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” – he’s always been black.

Asked by Letterman if he believes racism factored into recent criticism over health care reform, Obama deadpanned: “First of all, I think it’s important to realize that I was actually black before the election.”

“Really?” Letterman replied as the audience roared with laughter.

“This is true,” said a smiling Obama.

Turning earnest, Obama dismissed the notion that racism is at the heart of the criticism surrounding his plan to overhaul the nation’s health system.

“The American people, I think, gave me this extraordinary honor,” he said, referring to the presidency, “and that tells you, I think, a lot about where the country’s at.”

Obama’s appearance on “Letterman” marks the first time a sitting President has been on the show. He appeared with Jay Leno on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” earlier this year.

Obama is in New York City this week for the United Nations General Assembly.

The President specifically apologized to New Yorkers for the traffic congestion that the world confab always brings.

“I know traffic is bad for New Yorkers, so I apologize in advance for that,” he said

After the show, Obama slipped into a Manhattan church gym to play some basketball with his aides.

The President’s decision to appear on “Letterman” comes amid his media blitz aimed at building support for health care reform.

But Obama insisted he decided to appear on the show because he wanted to see the heart-shaped potato an audience member had brought.

The woman ended up giving the President the potato as a gift. When Letterman asked Obama if he could get it into the Smithsonian, the commander in chief replied, “You know, I think I could.”

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Sunday he would push world leaders this week for a reshaping of the global economy in response to the deepest financial crisis in decades.

In Europe, officials kept up pressure for a deal to curb bankers’ pay and bonuses at a two-day summit of leaders from the Group of 20 countries which begins on Thursday.

The summit will be held in the former steelmaking center of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, marking the third time in less than a year that leaders of countries accounting for about 85 percent of the world economy will have met to coordinate their responses to the crisis.

Obama said the U.S. economy was recovering, even if unemployment remained high, and now was the time to rebalance the global economy after decades of U.S. over-consumption.

“We can’t go back to the era where the Chinese or the Germans or other countries just are selling everything to us, we’re taking out a bunch of credit card debt or home equity loans, but we’re not selling anything to them,” Obama said in an interview with CNN television.

For years before the financial crisis erupted in 2007, economists had warned of the dangers of imbalances in the global economy — namely huge trade surpluses and currency reserves built up by exporters like China, and similarly big deficits in the United States and other economies.

With U.S. consumers now holding back on spending after house prices plunged and as unemployment climbs, Washington wants other countries to become engines of growth.

“That’s part of what the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh is going to be about, making sure that there’s a more balanced economy,” Obama told CNN.

China has long been the target of calls from the West to get its massive population to spend more. It may be reluctant to offer a significant change in economic policy when Chinese President Hu Jintao meets Obama this week.

The Wall Street Journal reported that a U.S. proposal to the rest of the G20 group foresaw a new global economic framework under which the United States would save more and cut its budget deficit, China would rely less on exports and Europe would make structural changes, possibly in areas such as labor law, to make itself more attractive to investment.

China was reluctant about the plan but Washington was bringing Beijing along by supporting its call for more say for developing countries at the International Monetary Fund, the newspaper said on its website.

G20 countries have not decided how detailed to make their pledges to change their economies and there would be no specific sanctions for those falling short, the report said.

Some economists have worried that a trade dispute over new U.S. import duties on Chinese tires could make it hard for leaders to renew their pledges to avoid protectionism, let alone discuss a major rethink of the world economy.

Nonetheless, calls for a new equilibrium are growing.

“We need to have rebalancing of growth and increase in consumption in the emerging markets to have enough growth in the short term,” International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn told the Financial Times.
